Over 150,000 Visitors, 200 Schools, 5 Continents and 96 Bespoke Events!

Dublin Contemporary 2011, Ireland’s international art exhibition, closed on Monday, 31st October after eight successful weeks. Recording over 150,000 visitors to the main exhibition hub in Earlsfort Terrace and the five partnering venues, 3,400 guests at The Office of Non-Compliance, 2,000 attendees at various talks and lectures and thousands more who interacted with the public realm, Ireland’s largest ever art exhibition exceeded its 150,000 visitor target.

Some 114 artists from 30 countries and five continents participated in Dublin Contemporary 2011. In addition to the 170 artworks exhibited in Earlsfort Terrace and the partnering venues, the city’s streets also came alive with visual art, as 16 artists from Ireland, the UK and America turned 22 sites across the city into large urban artworks as part of Dublin Contemporary’s Roadworks programme.

Commenting on the success of Ireland’s international art exhibition, Jimmy Deenihan TD., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht said, ‘Over the past eight weeks, the ground work for the future of visual arts in Ireland has been firmly cemented by Dublin Contemporary 2011. The success of this world scale exhibition means that we can now proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with other cities who host major international art exhibitions such as Documenta in Kassel and the Liverpool Biennial.’

Dublin Contemporary 2011 was delighted to welcome 3,400 visitors to The Office of Non-Compliance, which acted as the idea-generating engine of the exhibition. The Office of Non-Compliance hosted 33 bespoke events, with 148 contributors, among them, 6 hopeful Presidential candidates!

As well as offering a place for active discussion and debate at a critical juncture in Ireland’s history, one of Dublin Contemporary’s most significant goals was to widen the access of contemporary art to a larger public. The Dublin Contemporary Education Programme, generously sponsored by KPMG, was the route many visitors took towards a greater understanding of the exhibition. Over 500 Ten Minute Talks, Daily Scoop and Highlight Tours took place at Earlsfort Terrace, ensuring that the general public had a variety of options to inform their visit to the exhibition. In Earlsfort Terrace alone, 200 schools and 7,360 students from across Ireland participated in tailored tours, workshops, exam prep and outreach programmes.

Last Event at The Office of Non-Compliance: The Space InBetween

‘Space In-Between’ is a temporary installation at the Office of Non-Compliance shown as part of the exhibition at Earlsfort Terrace. This exhibition addresses the experience of the building by the visitor. Moving away from the pristine white space of the art gallery, the curatorial team have left exposed the remnants of wall paper, holes left by rusty nails, imprints of wooden wall panels, plaques and signage from the building’s life as a university campus. This curatorial decision to retain the original character of Earlsfort Terrace has added an extra layer to the experience of the exhibition. The architecture exerts it’s own presence as more than just a backdrop to the show but a reminder of the cultural history held in the building’s walls.

Artist and curator Varvara Shavrova has created a series of intimate photographs and sound recordings of confrontations between the art and the architecture over a period of one month. Rooms around Earlsfort Terrace and the works in them were recorded during different times of day, with changing natural and artificial different light, and also with presences and absences of the public, the attendants, and the artists in the spaces.

‘Space In-Between’ is presented as a slide show projected loop and a sound loop in the Office of Non-Compliance on the second floor of Earlsfort Terrace and will be available to the public from October 25th until the exhibition closes on October 31st.

The issues raised in ‘Space In-Between’ will serve as a framework to discuss the relationship between the architecture and the art at Dublin Contemporary. An informal discussion will be held at The Office of Non-Compliance, between artist and curator Varvara Shavrova, Dublin Contemporary curator Christian Viveros-Fauné, Architect and former President of the Architectural Association of Ireland, Hugo Lamont, Dublin Contemporary programme manager Kathy Scott, and more.

The Office of Non – Compliance countdown; Inspirational Trailblazers, Donal Dineen and other adventures

Tuesday, 25th October, Dublin Contemporary 2011

7.00pm Divining or Digging: Exploring Ireland’s Natural Resources with Gazillion.ie

Film Maker Colum Stapleton lives in the wild North West of Ireland, proximate to the Atlantic and for the past two years he has been trying to figure whether or not we have “gazillions of gas beneath that mighty marine Empire, or a hiss here and there.” At the Office of Non-Compliance, Colum Stapleton hopes to open a door into the world of tendering for exploration of gas. Comparing rumours with established facts, Colum will use a little humour to explore what might lie beneath. Geophysicists, hydrologists and diviners particularly welcome.

Wednesday, 26th October, Dublin Contemporary 2011

6.00pm Women, Shopping and Public Space: A Talk by Colette Fahy

‘Women, Shopping and Public Space’ explores the ways in which the activity of shopping has informed women’s relationship with public space and life over the past three centuries. The lecture also addresses men’s perceived relationship with shopping and the use of wider commercial contexts for political and social change.

7.00pm Space In-Between: Installation and Discussion

‘Space In-Between’ is a temporary installation at the Office of Non-Compliance, which will address the experience of the building by the visitor. Artist and curator Varvara Shavrova has created a series of intimate photographs and video recordings of confrontations between the art and the architecture over a period of one month. ‘Space In-Between’ is presented as a slide show projected loop and a sound loop. The issues raised in ‘Space In-Between’ will serve as a framework to discuss the relationship between the architecture and the art at Dublin Contemporary. This event will take the form of an informal discussion between artist and curator Varvara Shavrova, Dublin Contemporary curator Jota Castro, Architect and former President of the Architectural Association of Ireland, Hugo Lamont, photographer Kate Horgan, and more.

Thursday, 27th October, Dublin Contemporary 2011

6.00pm Temple Bar Gallery and Studios at Dublin Contemporary present ‘ Concentration City’

Speakers: Simon Walker, Carl Giffney and Culturstruction
This discussion will touch on subjects such as nature and the city, community, participation and building, the invisible city, gesture and planning and the city as unpredictable - an ancillary event to the exhibition, ‘Conquested’ at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, curated by Aoife Tunney, (21st October–26th November).

7.00pm ‘Trailblazers and Aha Moments- Secret Acts of Non-Compliance’

This event, run in collaboration with One Wild Life, brings together a diverse range of trailblazers, social entrepreneurs, activists and artists, who will each talk about their ‘Aha Moments’. A rare chance to gain insight into why movers and shakers do what they do, this event will offer an opportunity to hear how others have stepped off the beaten track to forge their own paths and perform their own inner acts of non-compliance.
Speakers include: Davie Philip: Cloughjordan Eco Village, Grace Dyas: Theatre Club, Joan Mulvihill: Irish Internet Association, Joanna Crooks: St. Agnes Music Project, Mari Kennedy: Transformation Space, Michael McDermott: LeCool, Noeline Kavanagh: Macnas, Peter O’Brien: Happenings, Ruairi McKiernan: Founder of SpunOut, Sheila Gallagher: Green Sod Ireland

Donal Dineen teams up with X-mas Soup partners, painter Guillermo Carrion and visual artist Hector Castells, to conjure a one-off picture show and record live video with live music sets from special guests Katie Kim and Sean McErlane. Who are you ? Vol.2. is especially curated by Donal and his creative crew of artists and musicians for The Office of Non Compliance at Dublin Contemporary 2011.

Friday, 28th October, Earlsfort Terrace

6.00pm The Poetry of Vision: Earlsfort Terrace Revisited

Loughlin Kealy, Professor at UCD from 1996 to 2005, and Owen Lewis, Dean of Architecture and Engineering 2001-2007, will discuss their memories of the Terrace in an Open Forum. This talk will be chaired by Sean Rothery.

Joe Comerford’s film Roadside will be shown, followed by a presentation by Brian Maguire and a conversation with curator Christian Viveros-Faune. Brian Maguire, working with the Dublin artist Eddie Cahill, has looked at a number of killings involving very young people in Dublin. Joe Comerford worked with Brian Maguire in Portlaoise Prison during the 90’s. He was important in the creation of a number of films by prisoners. Roadside, his new 12 minute film sculpture was made following this experience. It looks at the area of suicide in jail. Dublin Contemporary Curator Christian Viveros-Fauné will talk with both artists about their work and the social context from which it appears.

Want to find out more information about the Dublin Contemporary Roadworks pieces you see around the city?
We are delighted to introduce an amazing new social imaging platform that allows everyone to engage with Dublin Contemporary’s street art elements.

The ‘Snap and Tweet’ system, designed by Mobimage, encourages people to tweet pictures of the artworks on Dublin’s streets. Using cutting edge image recognition software, the system will automatically recognize the artwork in the pictures and tweet back relevant information, text and links to the user, as well as allowing users to like, share or comment on artworks.

With snap + tweet, you can explore, share and engage with street art in the Roadworks exhibition.

How it works:

1) Just take a picture of the Roadworks piece that catches your eye and tweet it, including the username @roadworks11 in the body of the tweet.

2) The snap + tweet system will recognize the image and send you back a tweet linking to content about that artwork and artist and more.

Happy snapping and tweeting!
